The teenager who changed world history
A. Franz Ferdinand was the direct cause of the First World War, which started the same year, and which resulted in the deaths of nine million soldiers. The war ended in 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles, which was very unfavourable to Germany. This, in turn, resulted in Germany going to war again in 1939, a war in which approximately 60,000,000 people around the world lost their lives.
B. For example, do you know who Gavrilo Princip was? Probably not. He was a Serb, born in Bosnia in 1894 and was one of nine children, six of whom died when they were very young. Gavrilo's health was also very bad and he suffered from tuberculosis. He studied in Belgrade where he spent most of his time with nationalists who wanted a union between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia. He died when he was just 24 years old.
C. The Second World War ended with the Treaty of Yalta in 1945 which led to the division of Eastern Europe, which eventually led to the conflict in Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Possibly no other person has had so much impact on world history over the last century than the sickly teenager, Gavrilo Princip.
D. History tells us about famous leaders, Kings and Queens, but what about the great changes which have been caused by one small act carried out by a relatively unknown person?
E. So why is he so important? Well, Gavrilo Princip is the boy who, at the age of 19, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914. Franz Ferdinand was going to be the next Austro-Hungarian emperor and the nationalists wanted their country to be independent from the empire. After shooting and killing the Archduke in his car, Gavrilo was captured by the police and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. But he died in prison of tuberculosis in 1918.

1)
The birds were watching all this. They felt sorry for the monkey but there was little they could do for him. One of them said, “Brother! Our small nests are not enough to give you shelter.” Another bird said, “All of us prepared for the rainy season. If you had, you would not be in this piteous situation.”
2)
On a mango tree in a jungle, there lived many birds. They were happy in their small nests. Before the onset of the rainy season, all the animals of the jungle repaired their homes. The birds also made their homes more secure.
3)
It continued raining for many days. One day, a monkey wet in the rain came into the forest. He sat on a branch, shivering with cold, water dripping from his body. The poor monkey tried his best to get shelter, but in vain. The leaves were not enough to save him from the rain. “Brrr! It is so cold!” said the monkey.
4)
“How dare you tell me what to do?” said the monkey, growling at the bird. The monkey angrily pounced on the bird’s nest, tore it and threw it on the ground. The bird and her chicks were helpless.

The poor bird thought, “Fools never value good advice. It is better not to advise them.”

5)
Many birds brought twigs and leaves and others wove their nests. “We should also store some food for our children,” chirped one of the birds. And they collected food, until they had enough to see them through the rainy season. They kept themselves busy preparing for the tough times.

Soon the rain came. It was followed by thunder and lighting. All the animals and birds stayed in their homes.

We need energy to heat our homes, cook and clean for our families and for transport. It allows us to live a comfortable and easy life. However, if we don’t use this energy properly we will soon run out. Luckily, there are things we can all do to help our planet and conserve our resources.
To begin with, much of the energy used at home goes to heating or cooling our homes. A simple way to help conserve energy is by lowering the thermostat by two degrees in the winter and raising it by two in summer. By doing so, you will not only lower your heating bill, but you will also reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that enters the atmosphere.
Another way you can save energy at home is by buying energy-saving appliances. Appliances like washing machines and cookers use a great deal of gas or electricity to work. When shopping for new appliances, look at the energy-saving sticker; they might be a little more expensive to buy, but they help save energy, and in the end will help you save money on your bills.
A lot of energy is used by means of transport too. One of the many ways to achive low energy usage is to leave the car at home and catch the bus or the train to move around the city. Fewer car in the street means less traffic and it will not only help save energy, but it also reduce the amount of air pollution.
In the end, it is up to every individual to take responsibility and charge their daily habits. If everyone does their part, then we can help save energy and our planet’s resources.
