19th century, every house-owner had to plant near his house 7-8 decorative or fruit trees. That tradition has been followed through to the present.

Tithin the city there ar nine parks.

Central Recreation PArk.

It's located at the end of Gogol Street in the eastern part of the city.

The first saplings for the park were bought from the Chu Valley. Now, it is the most popular park where residents and visitors enjoy their time among its 100 hectares of picturesque lanes and flowers-beds. The park offers the variety of recreation facilities, such as a stadium, tennis, amusement rides, a cinema, numerous snack-bars and cafes.

The 28 Panfilov's Guardsmen Parks

THe park is located just across from the Otrar Hotel. The park has the Glomery Memorial with its Eternal Flame and the Memorial LAne. THe Flame is a popular stopping spot fot wedding parties and you will often see them making photographs next to it. It was during the Moscow BAttle, 1941, when 28 fighters of the 1075th redimen of the 316th infanty division resisted 50 German tanks.

The division was raised in Almaty and was led by general Ivan PAnfilov.

This beautifulpark with its shady lanes and splendid flower-beds is our residents' most popular recreational place who enjoy the place and singing of birds.

Regulation and token money The Bank Charter Act of 1844 followed a long dispute about the control of the money supply and whether the value of the note issue should be allowed to exceed the stock of gold available to support it. The Act placed a statutory limit on the fiduciary issue (that part of the note issue which was not backed by gold) and restrictions were placed on the issue if notes by joint stock banks other than the Bank of England. In fact, these regulations were framed so that the passage of time would eventually leave the Bank of England as the sole note-issuing authority in England and Wales. The last private bank of issue in England surrendered its rights in 1921. Apart from relatively short periods of emergency when conversion was suspended, all bank-notes, until 1914 , were convertible into gold. Convertibility on a restricted basis was restored in 1925, but finally abandoned in 1931. Since that time Bank of England notes have been wholly inconvertible and we have now reached the stage where our bank-notes whole still carrying a ‘promise to pay’ printed on their faces, are no more than token money. This is also true of the coinage; the commodity value of the coins but a tiny fraction of their money value. Nevertheless the notes and coins are universally acceptable, the fact they have no real affects their ability to serve as money.

Peacekeeping Wherever there is conflict in the world and enemies have agreed to let a third party or neutral force come in to try and maintain the peace, it is usually the familiar blue helmets of the United Nations that we see on the scene. (D The actual definition of peacekeeping is a bit unclear and it was never written into the original U N Charter, but it goes something like «using military personnel f r om different countries under the command of the U N to control and resolve armed conflicts either between or within states». Peacekeeping is neither just finding out the facts nor full-scale military intervention, but something in between. Over the last ten years it has become clear that for peacekeeping to work certain things must already be in place — the conflicts must actually have finished and there must be a genuine desire for peace on both sides. The peacekeeping force must have clear international support and a mandate that shows it is strictly neutral; and it needs adequate resources to do the job. (2) There have been 56 U N peacekeeping operations in total since 1948, although over 30 of those have happened since 1990. Two of these operations have in fact never stopped since 1948: the interventions in the Arab/Israeli conflict following the foundation of the state of Israel, and in the dispute between Pakistan and India over the Kashmir region. Another that has been going on for over forty years is on the divided island of Cyprus, where peace has been maintained between Greek and Turkish Cypriots since March 1964. (3) There are different types of intervention, some more discrete than others: Observation/monitoring only, for example of Cuban troops leaving Angola or of the Iran-Iraq ceasefire in 1991. Assisting a country to independence, for example in Namibia 1978— 1989. Armed intervention, for example in the Suez Canal region 1956—1967 to keep Egypt and Israel apart and supervise the withdrawal of troops f r om the UK, France and Israel. (4) They are professional soldiers, civilian police and m i l i t a r y observers f r o m any member country of the U N . These countries also p r o v i d e supplies, transp o r t a t i o n , telecommunications, and a d m i n i s t r a t i v e help, amongst other t h i n g s . (5) Somalia was the first b i g f a i l u r e f o r U N i n t e r v e n t i o n in 1992. In Srebrenica in 1994, a Dutch force under U N command failed to p r e v e n t a massacre of the local population, and in R w a n d a in the same year there was fullscale genocide of nearly a million people, despite a peacekeeping force of 5,000. Four U N missions to A n g o l a failed to stop civil war breaking out again and again. I t seems only if there is a real will to t u r n away f r o m w a r , can peacekeepers be e f f e c t i v e . T h e attack on U N headquarters in Baghdad in 2003 has also called into question the respect f o r being impartial which the o r g a n i z a t i o n t h o u g h t it had. N e v e r t h e l e s s , most people agree that the w o r l d still needs some kind of neutral body, backed by f o r c e i f necessary, f o r helping f o r m e r enemies make the transition f r o m w a r to peace. Sunday. I like this day very much. You needn't hurry anywhere and you may go wherever you like after your week's work. On this day I wake up later than usual. But sometimes I don't get up till nine or ten o'clock. I read morning newspapers or listen to music. As soon as I get up I air the room, make my bed and do morning exercises. Then I have breakfast, clear away the dishes and wash up. Two more hours for getting ready with my homework and I am free. I meet my friends and we discuss our plans together. We may go to the cinema or theatre, to museums and parks. Last Sunday we went to the Botanical Garden. There were many beds of spring flowers there: red, yellow and blue. People in light clothes were walking along the paths. The air was fresh and promising. It was very pleasant to spend time there. In fine weather we also like to be out of town. We find a nice place somewhere in the forest or on the bank of the river. We lie in the sun, play different games and swim. In winter my friends and I often go to the skating-rink. Skating is my favourite kind of sport, but I like to ski too. When the weather is bad my friends come to my place. We listen to music or go to the cinema. We like films about the life of our contemporaries abroad. On the way home we usually discuss the films we've seen. In the evening all the members of our family get together. We have our supper, make plans for tomorrow, watch TV or read books. Reading is my hobby. Sometimes we receive guests at our place or go out for a walk. In general I enjoy my days off very much.

Answer the questions: 1. How many days a week do you have classes? 2. When is your day off? 3. What time do you get up on Sunday? 4. What do you do next? 5. Do you usually meet your friends on Sunday? What do you do together? 6. Do you often go to the country? Who with? What do you do there? 7. What do you do if the weather is bad?

Science often means different things to different people. To many it means bodies of knowledge about the physical world grouped under different subjects;

to some it means research or the pursuit of truth; to some it means the development of technology intended to benefit mankind; and to others it means finding out. experimenting, measuring. These are all different aspects of science, as the knowledge, experimenting, technology, etc., have all been produced by what could be called the "processes of science". Environmental problems are just one aspect of life to which science can be applied, but they are quite urgently in need of solution. Some science concepts are particularly relevant in the solving of environmental issues. Among them are 1. Energy (types of energy, law of conservation of energy, and law of energy degradation); 2. Ecosystem (energy flow in ecosystems, law of conservation of matter, nutrient cycling in ecosystems, evolution of ecosystems); 3. Resources (the nature of resources: inexhaustible, renewable, irreplaceable); 4. Food (production, nutrition, energy use); 5. Pollution (pollutant, threshold, synergy, persistence, biological magnification); 6. Human population (growth and control, birth rate, death rate, fertility rate, marriage age, density, and distribution).
