In the 1860s London was, quite literally, the capital of the world.
The city was growing, and as its population grew as well, transport in the city became a big problem. Some new way of travelling
was needed and people looked to the innovations of the Industrial
Revolution. The invention of the steam engine was relatively new
and exciting and people began to think that it could be possible to
transport people by trains underground. So it was that in 1863,
using techniques borrowed from digging tunnels for other uses,
a 2-mile line from Paddington in West London to Farringdon in
East London was built. Major cities all over the world soon copied
this type of city transit engineering. The most famous include:

1. Moscow underground which is the largest
in terms of passenger numbers, with more
than a billion passenger journeys a year. Some
underground stations are very beautiful and
include sculptures, mosaic pictures in the
ceilings, picturesque decorations. The first line was open in the thirties of the 20”‘ century. It ran through
the city centre and had just ten stations.

2. The New York underground which is the
largest in terms of kilometres covered. It is
often called the “Subway” and is one of the
world’s cheapest, with a single journey to and
from any station just $2. It is characterized
by the fact that its lines are named by num-
bers and letters (like 1, 3 and A, D) and has
carriages that are heated in winter and air-
conditioned in summer.

3. The Paris Metro which was built at the turn
of the 20”‘ century and has 368 stations covering 15 lines and transporting around six
million people daily. Some stations are designed in a Very artistic way characterized by flower and leaf motifs. The architect Hector
Guimard decorated this mass transit system
in tune with the city.

4. The Tokyo subway which became notoriousz
in 1995 when Aum Shinri Kyo cult used
Sarin gas on a train, killing 12 people. However, it is one of the safest underground systemsand generally people characterize it as the
world’s best in terms of ease of use and comfort.

5 The London Underground (The Metropolitan Railway) which was opened in 1863 and Londoners at once began speaking about it as
a fashionable way to travel. The Metropolitan
Railway grew and began to be called the Tube
because of the narrow tunnels that characterize the older parts of the system. Today the London Underground
covers most of Greater London with 11 different lines and 970
million passenger journeys every year.

ТЕКСТ: Television, also called TV, is one of the most important mass media. People with a television set can sit at home and can see and learn

about people, animals, and things in faraway lands. Millions of viewers around the world can watch sports events and other events of worldwide interest. TV brings its viewers a steady stream of programmes that are designed to give information and to entertain. In fact, television provides more entertainment programmes that any other kind of mass media. The programmes include sports events, variety shows, quiz shows, feature films, cartoons, fictional serials called soap operas, etc. There are two main kinds of television stations: public stations and commercial stations. Public television stations are supported by the government. They usually broadcast more educational programmes and programmes on cultural subjects. News and current affairs programmes make up an important section of programmes for most public television stations. Commercial television stations are run by private companies. They sell advertising time to pay for their operating costs and to make a profit for the companies that run the stations. People can also subscribe to cable television system. Viewers pay a fee for this service. Cable television signals are delivered to home TVsets of their customers by cables. Some cable systems carry more than one hundred channels – far more than can broadcast even in the largest urban areas. Satellite broadcasting is another form of subscription television. The signals are transmitted to home TVsets from a direct broadcasting satellite in space. The viewer must have a dish-receiver aerial to receive the programmes. We may speak about different advantages and drawbacks of television but almost every home has at least one TVset. On average, a TVset is in use for about 7 hours each day. Thus, television is the most effective means of mass communication known to mankind. It has become the people’s eyes and ears on the world.

Люди,помогите!!!Нужно предложения,написанные снизу вставить в текст,чтобы они подходили по смыслу... Soap Operas. In the 1930s, when radio was still in

its infancy, broadcasting stations in the USA wondered what type of programmes they should put on during the daytime. They came up with the idea of producing serials that would be on the radio every afternoon telling a continuous story. 7. _____________. Knowing that the majority of the audience would be women, the broadcasters decided that the women in the serials would be strong characters and the men weak. The serials were an instant success with listeners. As the radio stations were paid for by advertising, these programmes always carried advertisements and, since one of the most frequently advertised products was soap, the programmes became known as Soaps or Soap Operas. 8. ___________. The BBC had no interest in producing this type of programme but during the Second World War it was thought that the Americans should be shown how well the British people were standing up to the war. 9. ___________. It was called Front Line Family and showed how a typical English family, the Robinsons, were living during the war. 10.___________. The BBC were unwilling to do this but finally agreed and broadcast the programme in Britain, but changed the name to The Robinsons. The programme ran for six years. Other soaps were introduced later, one telling the life of a doctor’s family and another, The Archers, about life in a country village. The original aim of The Archers was to inform farmers of new developments in agriculture. The serial began in 1951 and is still to be heard on five evenings every week. Some attempts at soap opera began to appear on television in Britain in the mid-1950s, but it was not until 1961 that the first real soap opera appeared. 11. ___________. The serial, called Coronation Street, was about the lives of people living in a working-class street near Manchester. 12. ___________. The BBC never managed to produce a really successful soap opera until 1984, when it introduced Eastenders. This programme is about life in the area of the east end of London. For a time it had more viewers than Coronation Street and still rivals it as the most popular programme on the British television. There is a major difference between the two programmes in that Eastenders concentrates on rather depressing realism whilst Coronation Street, although having serious storylines, always contains a strong element of comedy. (A). This was shown not by the BBC, but by commercial television. (B.) To keep the listeners’ interest, there would be far more crisis accuring than in real life. (C). Some people in Britain managed to hear the programme and asked for it to be broadcasted for the British audience. (D). It was really by chance that the soap opera appeared in Britain. (E). Although the serial was planned to run for only thirteen weeks, it is still to be seen several nights every week and almost every week has more viewers than any other programme on British television. (F). For this reason, a soap opera was written for the North American service of the BBC. (G). It has always been the most popular programme on television.

The Name by Henry Cecil Henry Cecil (pseudonym, real name Henry Cecil Leon) is an English detective story writer. He was born in Middlesex before the

First World War; the author of many successful books: ‘Alibi for a Judge’, ‘Friends at Court’, ‘Sober as a Judge’ and others. ‘Settled out of Court’, in a dramatic version made by William Saroyan and the author, ran for some time at the Strand Theatre. ‘George Elephant!’ called the Clerk in Court Number One; and a small man with glasses was brought. ‘Are you George Elephant?’ asked the Clerk. ‘I am’. ‘You are charged with murder; that you at Golders Green on the 19th day of January 1948, murdered Jane Elephant. How say you, George Elephant, are you guilty or not guilty?’ ‘Not guilty.’ ‘Very well,’ said the Judge. ‘You may sit down.’ Except for a few remarks on the curious name of the prisoner, few people were interested in the case. The facts as stated were very simple. On the 20th January the prisoner had walked into a police station. ‘I have cut my wife`s throat,’ he said. ‘She`s quite dead.’ It seemed true enough. Her throat seemed to have been cut with a razor which was near her body. George was born of ordinary middle-class parents at the end of the nineteenth century. There was no sign of madness in the family. On leaving school George had gone into his father`s business, and after that he had married and settled down to an ordinary life. Jane was not a particularly attractive wife. Although she was pretty, she grew fat as she grew older. She took a good deal of pleasure in laughing at George, and one of the subjects of which she never seemed to get tired was his last name. George was a little ashamed of his name, but he had never had the courage to change it. Usually, however, the owners of unfortunate names just bear them. George had certainly suffered a great deal. When he first went to school and was asked his name in front of the other boys, he replied, ‘George Elephant.’ ‘Olliphant?’ said the master. ‘No, sir, Elephant.’ ‘What, Elephant? Like the animals?’ ‘Yes, sir, like the animals.’ After that at school he was called by the names of all known, and some unknown, animals. George was modest, and boys at school are merciless. He was not happy there and was thankful when he left. But his troubles did not end when he left school. When he married Jane he had hoped she would make his difficulties lighter. But Jane did not mind being called Elephant; in fact she told everyone her new name. Even when she was being loving she used to call him ‘my elephant boy’, and so he was not allowed to forget. When Sir Gordon Macintosh had discovered these facts, he had no doubt at all of the proper defence to raise in the court. He immediately had George examined by famous doctors. The doctors said that the accused was not mad, but that his mind was very much affected by jokes about his name. The doctors for the defence said that the prisoner might have been made so angry by his wife`s jokes that he could not control himself. George was not found guilty of murder, but he was sent to prison with hard labour for seven years. That, however, was not the end of the matter, because the case by this time caused great public interest. In the end, so much sympathy was shown for George and so much pressure was put on the Government, that George`s time in prison was reduced from seven years to three. Two years later, just before he was let out, a priest arrived at the prison where George was. He had a talk with George. ‘Before you leave,’ said the visitor, ‘would you like to say anything to me3 in secret. Tell me, for example, what6 was it that actually led you to kill your wife?’ ‘Well, as a matter of fact,’ said George, ‘I was fond of another woman.’ пожалуйста,очень нужно перевести,я не успеваю(((
