He didn't swim in the lake. It was too cold.
Он не купался в озере. Было слишком холодно. Это прошедшее время. В первом предложении у нас есть глагол swim, чтобы сделать отриц предложение, надо добавить did not (did вспомогательный глагол в Past Simple). Во втором предложении надо употребить глагол to be в прошедшем времени. be >> was

He didnt swim in the lake. It was too cold.
Он не купался в озере. Было слишком холодно. Так как у нас есть глагол swim в первом предложении, а все возможные ответы даются в Past Simple (прошедшем времени), то надо взять вариант со вспомогательным глаголом did и отрицанием not, которое говорит о том, что эта персона (человек) не делал этого. Во втором предложении говорится о погоде,температуре. к третьему лицу It нужно употребить глагол to be - is - was. И так как первое предложение отрицательно - не плавал - Почему? - потому что было так то, то есть положительно.
Ответ: a) didnt - was.
