The Baltic Sea can no longer be used as a garbage dump. Water is essential for life. Only where it is in sufficient quantity and in good quality, there may be people, animals and plants. This also applies to salt water seas and fresh water in rivers, lakes, and in the polar ice and glaciers. In general, water covers more than 70 percent of our land. Already a few years ago, experts in the field of environmental protection warned that the Baltic Sea will soon be a desert without water fish and plants. Nearly 20 000 kilometers along the coast of the Baltic Sea located paper and pulp mills, shipyards and oil refineries, nuclear power plants, chemical and steel plants. The amount of sewage in coastal cities is growing. Rivers deliver more dirt to the Baltic Sea. The movement of tankers and passenger ships, water tankers and vessels for the transportation of paper on growing. More than the sad consequences: hundreds of thousands of tons of solid and liquid waste per year are displayed in the Baltic Sea - often only cut, but most have not been cleaned. These wastes from households, industrial and commercial enterprises, urban waste water and ships contain highly toxic pollutants. Life in the Baltic Sea has been under the threat of hundreds of thousands of dead cod and flounder in the Nile fjord, places, banned bathing at Flensburg and Luebeck under a lot of places where fishing is prohibited. In this regard, the coastal Baltic states in 1974, entered into an agreement. It was determined the harmful and toxic substances can not merge with sewage into the sea. The first successes in the fight for a clean Baltic Sea have been achieved. Particularly dangerous insect spray "DDT" was banned in all Baltic countries. Factories had to cease production when they could not comply with the order for the improvement of purification of waste water. Many large cities have built a new treatment plant. Places on the Baltic Sea, which is particularly threatened, already under control. But we need to add more effort to finally secure it.
