MASS MEDIA
Mass media (that is the press, the radio and television)
plays an important role in the life of society. They inform,
educate and entertain people. They also influence the
way people look at the events and sometimes make them
change their views.
Millions of people watch TV and read newspapers in
their spare time. People listen to the radio while driving а саг. On the radio one can hear music, plays, news and
various discussions of current events. Lots of radio or
TV games and films attract large audience.
Newspapers give more detailed reviews of political
life, culture and sports. Basically they are read by the
people who are subscribers and those who are interested
in politics.
There is a lot of advertising in mass media. Many TV
channels, radio stations and newspapers are owned by
different corporations. The owners can advertise what
ever they choose.
But we cannot say that mass media do not try to raise
the cultural level of people or to develop their tastes. Mass
media bring to millions of homes not only entertaiment
and news but also cultural and educational programs.
There is a great number of TV, cable TV and satellite
TV channels and lots of radio stations and newspapers now.

Healthy Food

Eating is fun, especially when you are hungry. Most people have a favourite food. Some people enjoy eating sweet things like cakes, chocolates and ice cream. Other people enjoy savoury foods like cheese and meet. Enjoying eating is our body’s way of making sure that is gets the things it needs to work properly. Food helps us to keep warm, talk, run and do all the other things we do. It helps us to grow and stay healthy. Vitamins also help us to be healthy. Scientists name vitamins after the alphabet. All of them are very important, for example: vitamin C keeps our skin and gums healthy. It is found in fresh fruit and green vegetables, such as oranges, blackcurrants, lettuce. Brussels sprouts and spinach also contain a lot of vitamin C. Vitamin D helps our bones to grow strong and hard, and we are able to make it for ourselves if our skin gets enough sunlight. But we can also get vitamin D if we eat fish, milk, butter, cheese and margarine. Some people buy pills and tablets containing vitamins. But most of us get more than enough of them from our food.

Переведите на русский))) When people staying in a hotel are hungry or just want to relax and have good time listening to music

and having a drink, they go to a restaurant or a bar. There is usually a wide choice of beverages there to please everyone. A barman or a wine waiter offers the wine list where the guests can find any drink they ike. For those who don't drink alcohol there are soft (or long) drinks such as juice, lemonade, Coke, mineral water — still or 55 fizzy. Beer is very popular and it can be served bottled, draught or canned. For people who want something stronger there is a great variety of alcoholic (or short) drinks. For example, spirits: rum, vodka, whisky, brandy, cognac. Then come fortified wines: liqueur, port, sherry, vermouth; and table wines dry or sweet, white, red or rose. Guests can also order a cup of tea; coffee, black or white, hot chocolate.

10 The most basic parts of something can be
called . Сам текст :I am writing this letter to welcome all of you
who are about to begin your first year course in
Biology here at the university. You might think
it is a little early for me to ask you to think
about what you will do when you leave here in
three years' time. However, our science, like
any other, has so many different areas it is
impossible for you to study them all. The first
thing you will need to think about is
specialising. This letter is to offer you some
suggestions to think about for your future.
As you know, there are four main areas of
biology that we shall concentrate on in the
coming years. Biology can be divided into
zoology, the study of animal life, and botany,
the study of plant life. We shall also study
molecular biology, the study of how the
building blocks of living things, the cells, work.
Another topic of interest is genetics, how
biological information is passed on from one generation to the next: that is, inheritance. You
should specialise, but you will also need to
know about all of these four areas of study.
Plants and animals do not live separately from
each other; all living things are made up of cells
and one of the things genetics tells us is how
plants and animals adapt to the conditions
around them.
So what about after the course is over and you
have graduated in Biology? Can you have a
career in biology? For those who choose to
specialise in genetics or molecular biology
there are important career opportunities in
medicine. At the present time, there is a great
deal of research going on in gene therapy where
biologists are working with doctors and
chemists to find new ways of treating diseases.
Other biologists are looking at ways of changing
the genetic composition of the plants we grow
for food; of making them more able to fight
diseases and at the same time produce
more food.
We are experiencing a period of climatic change
too, and this is having an effect on the way
animals and plants live. The science of ecology
is becoming more and more important;
biologists who specialise in zoology are working
in many parts of the world. Some are working to
protect species like the tiger, which are
seriously threatened by climate change. Others
are investigating wildlife from the smallest
insects to the largest mammals, trying to
understand how they all live together. Botanists
are looking at the effect new types of food crops
have on the environment and how changes in
that area can affect our general health. There is
even a new area of biology called astrobiology,
which is looking at the possibilities of life on
other planets - but perhaps that is something
for the more distant future.
Whatever you specialise in, as long as there is
life on this (or any other) planet, there is work
for a biologist.
Good luck and enjoy your studies!
Jean Shearer
Professor of Biology
Задание 2 : E Comprehension
Read the text and answer the questions
in your own words.
1 What four areas can biology be divided into?
2 If you are interested in cells, which area
should you study?
3 How can zoologists help animals in the wild?
4 In what way can botanists protect people and
the environment?
5 What is astrobiology?

найти предложения в которых употребляются причастие 1,перевидите их на русский язык Students graduate in more than 430 specialities.

Tuition rests on a broad scientific basis, lectures and on theory being combined with practical classes. There is a common curriculum for all related faculties in the first and second years. About a million of students taking part in the activities of student scientific groups and industrial design bureaus work under the guidance of their professors.
Studying and working at the same time students get considerable benefits from the state. Training at institutions of higher learning lasts from four to six years. There is the greatest number of graduates. They get jobs in their own fields.
