We followed the man's long list of directions. We drove through one village...

5-9 класс

...and then another...

...over two bridges...
...past a huge out-of-town superstore...
...and down a twisty lane.
Finally we spotted a half-hidden broken sign.
We drove up a muddy track, and found Uncle-and-Auntie Pat feeding the animals.
You managed to find us, then, said Uncle Pat. Only just! muttered dad.
Everyone greeted each other, and then you just as quickly, Mum and Dad were saying their goodbyes.
I stood and waved as their car disappeared down the dirt track.

Look around. I wonder what things are part and parcel of your life? What is it that you can't do without in the 21st century? I bet you'll make a long list of things which were once somebody's great inventions but by now, have become your bare necessities.

Buzz-buzz. The telephone is ringing. Pick up the receiver, please. You are on the phone now. You can talk to a relative or friend who is far away. It was Alexander Bell who made it possible for you by inventing an apparatus for sending or receiving sound in 1876. The telephone was big and immobile for a long time, but today there are cell-phones, that is small gadgets which you can carry and use anywhere. But don't take it for a children's game "Telephone " which is popular in many countries.

Have you got a travel bug? Do you feel like taking a trip? Don'tleave your digital camera behind. It will help you to catch the best moments of your journey to remember it by. Scientists invented the good old camera sensitive to light to make photos ofpeople and places.

What is your favourite FM-radio station? Please tell me what helps you to enjoy listening to music the best - the radio, your walkman or your IPOD. They all came from an apparatus for receiving sounds broadcast through the air. Thanks to them, we have a chance to get entertained wherever we go.

You won't believe it, but some of the inventions were made by accident! Penicillin, for instance, the first type of antibiotic. It was Alexander Fleming, a Scottish scientist who was doing experiments with bacteria. One day one of the dishes where he was growing bacteria, got soft and green. He was about to throw it out when he noticed that the soft and green material had killed the bacteria. This discovery made him a Nobel Prize winner in 1945. I'm dead sure Fleming's invention will live far into the 21st century...

A word about books. Man invented a number of means to cover distance - cars, planes, radio, TV, computers, spaceships, etc. But up till now there has been

only one way to covor time- books. Reading is real fun, isn't it? It may be a fantastic journey into the past or the future, a true love story or a serious novel to challenge your thoughts, a detective or something funny if you like humour.
Until recently you could see a lot of people, old and young, reading in many different places, in a park or on a bus, in a plane or on a beach. It might be a magazine or a newspaper, a volume of poems or a lengthy novel. All kinds of reading stuff. But now it's a rare event. Altenrative sources of information like TV or computers seen more attractive to most people. But books give us something different from them. It's a dialogue with somebody who can tell you a lot about life, people, their relations, and about this fast changing world. Books help you understand yourself better. They develop imagination, love for word and expression and awaken a wish in you to create something. It is next to impossible to imagine life without books.

The way we read. We read in meany different ways, and at different speeds depending on the aim of reading. We sometimes look through the book to see what it is about. We may just want to get the general idea from a newspaper article, a report , or a book in a bookshop. This type of reading is callled skimming reading.
Quick reading is also practised when we want to get a particular piece of information, such as a date or a telephone directories, dictionaries and web pages.
But if we want to get the detailed information we read slowly and carefully. This is called intensive reading, it needs training and special skills to understand the entire content, the beauty of the expression. You get involved in the story. It makes you laugh your head off or cry your heart out. It develops your personality.
