They felt very well in it. It was the highest camp on the
mountain. The night before the climb, they drank tea and had
supper. They discussed what to take with them to the top. They decided to leave their sleeping bags and tents behind because the
equipment was too heavy. Early in the morning they had
breakfast and got dressed. Then they started to go up the
mountain. It was extremely difficult. The snow was very deep.
After a long, hard fight they reached the top together. They laughed, shouted and took some photographs. Then the sun disappeared and the two men realised they were on the top of
Everest and it was almost night. Their camp was too far to
reach. They went a little way down the mountain, but there was
no moon and it was too dangerous. They had to spend the
night on the mountain, at about 10,000 metres, with no tent, sleeping
bags or food. They believed it was possible. They dug a
hole in the snow, and buried themselves. They did not sleep.
It was -30 °C. When the light came at last they began
climbing down, and soon they got to their camp. Everybody was
happy.
