It is not a coincidence that Novgorod University has Prince Yaroslav’s name. In the year of 1030, Yaroslav the Wise came to Novgorod the Great to teach reading and writing to the children of religious and senior officials. It is a well-known fact that education was of vital importance in the Novgorod system of spiritual values in the 11th century. Indeed, the existence of schools in medieval Novgorod can be traced in birch bark letters and chronicles. As time passed, not only were schools established but also theological seminaries, gymnasiums, and libraries. That is why Academician Yanin, the famous investigator of ancient Novgorod called it «the cradle of Russian education». Thus, the Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University became the successor to what was considered one of the oldest educational traditions in
Russia.
On the eve of the university’s first anniversary, Prince Yaroslav the Wise’s personal seal was discovered during some archaeological excavations. Academician Yanin considered it a remarkable coincidence and suggested awarding the university the name of the Russian prince.

В год 1030, Ярослав Мудрый пришел в Великий Новгород, чтобы научить читать и писать детей религиозных и старших должностных лиц. Это хорошо известный факт, что образование имело жизненно важное значение в системе Новгородских духовных ценностей в 11-м веке. Действительно, существование школ в средневековом Новгороде можно проследить в берестяных письмах и хрониках. Со временем были основаны не только школы, но и духовные семинарии, гимназии, библиотеки. Именно поэтому академик Янин, известный исследователь древнего Новгорода назвал его «колыбелью российского образования». Таким образом, Новгородский государственный университет Ярослава Мудрого стал преемником того, что считалось одной из старейших образовательных традиций в России.
Накануне первой годовщины университета, во время археологических раскопок была обнаружена личная печать князя Ярослава Мудрого. Академик Янин посчитал это поразительным совпадением и предложил присвоить университету имя русского князя.

But with the development of crowded industrial cities the problem of pollution has become more important. Using automobiles and other machines made pollution steadily worse. Since the 1950’s people have become alarmed with the danger of environmental pollution.
Air, water, and soil are necessary for existence of all living things. But polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. On polluted soil, food products can’t be grown. In addition environmental pollution spoils the natural beauty of our planet.
Pollution is a very complicated and a serious problem. Automobiles are polluting the air but they provide fast transportation for the people. Plants and factories pollute the air and the water but they provide jobs for people and produce necessary goods. Fertilizers and pesticides are important for growing crops but they pollute soil.
Thus, people would have to stop using many useful things if they wanted to end pollution immediately. Most people don’t agree to do that. But pollution can be reduced gradually. Scientists and engineers can find the ways to reduce pollution from automobiles and factories. Government can pass the laws that would make enterprises take measures for reducing of pollution. Individuals and groups of people can work together to persuade enterprises to stop polluting environment.

Люди всегда загрязняли окружающую среду. Но до последнего времени загрязнение не было такой серьезной проблемой. В прошлом большинство людей проживали в малонаселенных сельских районах, и у них не было загрязняющих природу машин. Но с развитием перенаселенных индустриальных городов проблема загрязнения стала намного серьезнее. Использование автомобилей и других машин и механизмов привело к тому, что окружающая среда стала постоянно и интенсивно загрязняться. С 50-х годов прошлого столетия люди стали ощущать тревогу в связи с опасностью загрязнения окружающей среды.
Воздух, вода и почва необходимы для существования всех живых существ. Но загрязненный воздух может стать причиной болезни и даже смерти. Загрязненная вода приводит к гибели рыб и других существ, обитающих в море. На загрязненной почве нельзя выращивать пищевые продукты. Кроме того, загрязнение окружающей среды портит естественную красоту нашей планеты.
Загрязнение — это очень сложная и серьезная проблема. Автомобили загрязняют воздух, но они служат для быстрого перемещения людей. Заводы и фабрики загрязняют воздух и воду, но они обеспечивают рабочие места для людей и позволяют производить необходимые товары. Удобрения и пестициды необходимы для выращивания сельскохозяйственных культур, но они загрязняют почву.
Поэтому людям пришлось бы перестать использовать многие полезные вещи, если бы они захотели немедленно прекратить загрязнение окружающей среды. Однако большинство людей не согласятся на это. Но загрязнение можно уменьшить постепенно. Ученые и инженеры могут найти способы уменьшить загрязнение от автомобилей, заводов и фабрик. Правительство может издать законы, которые бы заставили предприятия принять меры по уменьшению загрязнения. Отдельные люди и группы людей могут сотрудничать в деле охраны окружающей среды.
